Health Care Data Bank begins
receiving claims data
Electronic files containing health
insurance claims data have begun
arriving in Maine, signaling the first step
in the creation of the nation’s first
comprehensive Health Care Claims
Data Bank. The Claims Data Bank is
being developed through the new Maine
Health Data Processing Center, a unique
public/private partnership between the
Maine Health Data
Organization (MHDO)

Researchers seek answers to persistent pain
A group of medical researchers wants to know why many patients have persistent pain
after experiencing a herniated lumbar disc, even when the disc is surgically removed or
shrinks spontaneously.
Working this winter as part of the Pain Genome Initiative conducted by a division of
the National Institutes of Health, the MHIC is helping researchers carry out the first
extensive human genetic association study of the contribution of genetic variability to
the development of chronic pain. The MHIC is managing the project, including the
collection of blood samples from patients in Maine and New Hampshire.
