Employer survey: Maine
benefit costs among highest
A recent survey of Maine employers
confirms that the state’s health benefits
costs are among the highest in the nation.
Results of the annual Employer Benefits
Survey conducted by the MHIC for the
Maine Health Management Coalition
were compared to benchmarks from
Mercer for the Northeast as well as for
the rest of the U.S. As the chart below
shows, Total Premiums (employer paid
plus employee paid) were 23% higher in
Maine than nationally for HMOs, 15%
higher for Point Of Service, and 12%
higher for Indemnity/Preferred Provider
Organizations.
The Employer Benefits Survey,
which has been conducted yearly since
1998, includes information from 30 of
Maine's major employers and contains
details about 72 different health care
products offered as parts of benefit plans.
Over the past five years, employers
have used this survey as a tool for
comparing their costs with other
employers and for making adjustments to
benefits design to ensure their workers
will have access to affordable coverage.
This winter, invitations to participate
in the 2003 survey have been mailed to
members of the Maine Health Care
Purchasing Collaborative
in an effort to expand the
number of employers
taking part in the survey.
Expanding participation
will lead to a clearer
picture of health benefits
across a wide spectrum of
Maine employers located
throughout the state.

Maine launches Health Claims Data Bank
Maine’s new Health Claims Data Bank is expected to help policy makers and
others better understand the factors driving up the cost and utilization of health care.
In a unique public/private collaboration, the MHIC has partnered with the Maine
Health Data Organization (MHDO) to form the Maine Health Data Processing Center,
which will build, maintain, and verify the nation’s first comprehensive statewide
Health Care Claims Data Bank.
